  • Itumeleng Khune is still serving the suspension handed down by Kaizer Chiefs
  • The veteran goalkeeper was punished for reportedly being under the influence
  • Chiefs interim coach, Cavin Johnson, has given an update on Khune's situation

Kaizer Chiefs interim coach, Cavin Johnson, has provided an update on the suspension of veteran goalkeeper, Itumeleng Khune.

The shot-stopper's suspension stems from when he reportedly arrived at training in December 2023 while under the influence of alcohol.

Questions arose after Khune was also not featured in the AmaKhosi's goalless DStv Premiership draw with Royal AM on Sunday, February 18.

During the post-match conference, Johnson explained there was no change in the situation and confirmed Khune's suspension would remain in effect until further notice.

"He’s still in the same situation that you guys find in the media, and the club will do something once that is done," the interim coach said, per iDiski Times.

The latest update from Johnson has cast uncertainty over the goalkeeper's future, especially considering his contract expires at the end of the current season.

Chiefs had reportedly informed Khune prior that this season would be his last before he transitioned into marketing and ambassadorial roles within the club.

The goalkeeper's illustrious career with the AmaKhosi, having signed on in the 2004/05 season, includes three league titles and numerous domestic triumphs.

Chiefs turn to young talent

In other news related to Kaizer Chiefs, promising young talent, Wandile Duba, has reportedly been reintegrated into the squad after facing a potential exit from the club.

The 19-year-old, who made his senior debut in 2022 under former coach, Arthur Zwane, made a cameo off the subs bench against Royal AM, coming on for Ashley Du Preez.

Chiefs' commitment to nurturing young talent is evident, with reports indicating the imminent promotion of 15-year-old Neo Bohloko to the first team, as reported by SNL24.

Motaung hails clubs after AFCON 2023 success

Sports Brief also previously reported on Kaizer Chiefs' marketer and Vice-President of the African Club Association, Jessica Motaung, discussing the relationship between domestic teams and international sides.

Also a successful businesswoman, Motaung was elected ACA Vice President and has been in Abidjan in January and February for AFCON 2023, enhancing relationships and refining the organisation's framework.
