Premier League vs La Liga: Which is the best football league and why?
FootballEuropean Super League: Bayern Joins Hands With Atleti, United to Slam the Door on New Competition
- FC Bayern Munich have joined with European clubs in rejecting the European Super League
- Real Madrid and Barcelona are the driving forces behind the proposal of a new competition
- Founding members Man United and Atletico Madrid are now among the league's detractors
FC Bayern Munich has mirrored Atletico Madrid's stance, standing firm against the revived European Super League following plans for its resurgence by the organising group.
A court decision on Thursday highlighted that UEFA and FIFA's attempts to ban clubs and players from existing competitions over participation in the ESL were unlawful.
Yet, the challenge persists for the two remaining clubs in support - Barcelona and Real Madrid - as most top European clubs have distanced themselves from the concept due to widespread fan opposition since the backlash in 2021.
How European clubs reacted to ESL
Atletico Madrid
As one of the leading clubs to oppose the revised Super League, the Rojiblancos issued a statement via SportBIBLE:
"The European football community does not support the European Super League. Germany, France, England, Italy, Spain (except for Real Madrid and Barcelona), etc. oppose the Super League.
"We advocate for protecting the broader European football family, preserving domestic leagues, and securing qualification for European competitions through on-field performance each season."
Manchester United
Manchester United swiftly followed Atleti's stance with their own statement, despite being among the primary proponents of the plans two years ago.
On this occasion, the club emphasised their commitment to staying within UEFA competitions. The Red Devils released a statement in response to the European Court of Justice's ruling, affirming their stance, per 90Min.
"Our position has not changed. We remain fully committed to participation in UEFA competitions and to positive cooperation with UEFA, the Premier League, and fellow clubs through the ECA on the continued development of the European game."

The Bavarian powerhouses have also aligned themselves with the mentioned European heavyweights to reaffirm their stance against the Super League.
"It’s very clear: the door for the Super League at FC Bayern remains closed. Such a competition would represent an attack on the importance of domestic leagues and the statistics of European football," said Bayern CEO, Jan-Christian Dreesen, as quoted by Fabrizio Romano.

UEFA reacts to ruling on Super League
In a related publication, Sports Brief reported that UEFA said Thursday's ruling by Europe's top court 'did not signify an endorsement or validation' of the breakaway competition.
UEFA added the ruling instead underscored a pre-existing shortfall within its pre-authorisation framework, a technical aspect that was acknowledged and addressed in June 2022.
