AFCON 2023: Pitso Mosimane Weighs In on Bafana Bafana’s Chances in Group Stage

Former national coach, Pitso Mosimane has weighed in on South Africa's chances in the group stage of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

Bafana Bafana is drawn in the dicey Group E alongside Mali, Namibia, and Tunisia.

Hugo Broos' side takes on the Eagles of Mali in their opening fixture at the tournament on January 16 before a date with Namibia on January 21.

They will file out against Tunisia in their last group game on January 24, but Mosimane believes this will not be a very tough group.

The former Al Wahda of UAE tactician believes South Africa should be able to reach the knockout phase of the competition.

Mosimane admitted he had not watched Bafana Bafana in action for a long time but had been following their results, via iDiski Times:

"Honestly, I am not really unhappy [at the draw], especially when you see the teams we were presented with.

"Mali and Tunisia are both big teams for sure, but I preferred them to Senegal or Ivory Coast - which is very good for us.

"And then Namibia is a team we know very well, so I think if we achieve our best level, we can go through the group stages," he added.

Mosimane was part of the technical crew under head coach, Carlos Alberto Parreira, that led South Africa to the FIFA World Cup in 2010.

The 59-year-old veteran tactician has been without a managerial role since departing UAE Pro League outfit, Al Wadha last month after some poor results.

The former SuperSport United boss parted ways with the club and has since been linked with several top African club and national roles, including Nigeria.
