Former Ghana international, Kevin-Prince Boateng broke down in uncontrollable tears during an interview after his boyhood club Hertha Berlin suffered Bundesliga relegation.

Boateng, who started as captain of Hertha Berlin in the game against VfL Bochum, could not help the club stay in the league after a 1-1 home draw on Sunday.

After the game, Boateng stayed behind for hours as he reflected on what has become a very tough end to a long career.

In a video shared on social media, the former Sassuolo star is seen in tears as he struggles to find words to describe his feelings.

"I can't realize it yet. It is just bitter, I love this club. I came here and I knew that not everything would be rosy. The fans are angry, disappointed and sad, that is completely normal. I can understand them, I am a Hertha fan myself." he told reporters, as quoted by DW.

Boateng returned to Hertha Berlin in 2021 after a career that has seen him play for several big clubs, including Barcelona and AC Milan.

Last season, with relegation stirring at Hertha, the then 35-year-old inspired them in the play-offs as they confirmed their stay for another season.

He was rewarded with a year extension at the end of the campaign. He will retire after Hertha's final game against Wolfsburg.
