Raphael Varane allowed emotions to get the better of him as he left the pitch in tears after he picked an injury while in action for Manchester United against Chelsea.

The Frenchman has formed an important part of Erik ten Hag's team and has been partnering with summer arrival Lisandro Martinez at the heart of United's defense.

But as the defender stuck out his leg to make the tackle, his knee jolted into the pitch.

While the extent of the injury remains unknown, there are fears the France international could potentially miss the 2022 World Cup, which is scheduled to kick off in mid-November.

And Varane appeared to be well aware of this as he was seen burying his head in his shirt in tears as his teammates consoled him.

The 2018 World Cup winner was also visibly distraught as United medics treated him before he trudged off after a brief word with Erik ten Hag.

The United boss went on to introduce Victor Lindelof to replace Varane as the two teams settled for a 1-1 draw.

Jorginho found the back of the net for the hosts from the penalty spot in the 87th minute before Casemiro struck an equaliser for the Red Devils at the death.
