- This season's Champions League was won by the competition's most successful side, Real Madrid after they edged Liverpool in the finals last Saturday
UEFA's Technical Observer panel has selected its 2021/22 UEFA Champions League Team of the Season with some conspicuous names excluded.
As expected, players of Real Madrid and Liverpool - who made the finals of this season's Champions League finals- dominate the Team of the Season.
Regular names such as Paris Saint-Germain's Neymar and Lionel Messi as well as Manchester United superstar Cristiano Ronaldo and Liverpool duo Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane were all exempted in this season's Champions League Team of the Season.
Real Madrid's Benzema, Vinicius Junior, Luka Modric and Champions League finals man-of-the-match winner Thibaut Courtois all made the list while Liverpool's Fabinho, Andy Robertson, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Virgil Van Dijk got a mention.
Completing the Team of the Season are Manchester City's Kevin De Bruyne, Kylian Mbappe of Paris Saint-Germain and incoming Real Madrid hard-tackling defender Antonio Rudiger.
In a post on Twitter, sighted by Sports Brief, the official account of the Champions League announced its Team of the Season, which was selected by the UEFA Technical Observer panel.
Retired football icons grace Champions League finals
Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Real Madrid legend Zinedine Zidane, Brazilian great Ronaldinho and many more sporting stars have graced the Stade de France for the final of the UEFA Champions League.
Spanish giants Real Madrid face Liverpool in the final of Europe's elite competition in the French capital.
In photos posted on social media, spotted by Sports Brief, the Stade de France was full of stars, from Zidane to Rafael Nadal, and to Brazil legend Ronaldo.
