- Manchester United icon Gary Neville has declared David de Gea the club's player of the season
- The legendary defender believes De Gea's outstanding performances were critical in United's otherwise poor season
- However, Neville was also quick to single out Cristiano Ronaldo and Fred for their outstanding performances
Gary Neville has named his Manchester United player of the season after the club's horrendous campaign.
United were below par across all competitions during the just-concluded 2021/22 season, with the club ending the campaign without a trophy.
The Red Devils could only manage a sixth-place finish on the Premier League standings as they missed out on a Champions League spot.
Despite the club's poor outing under the tutelage of Ralf Rangnick, fans have been afforded the chance to vote for their best player of the season.
The winner of the poll is expected to walk home with the prestigious Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year award.
Gary Neville names his Man United player of the season
Metro UK reports Neville is among several former Red Devils who Man United have invited to share their view on who should take the prize.
According to the former United captain, the award belongs to David de Gea who he believes has been outstanding.
However, the former England international was also quick to single out Cristiano Ronaldo and Fred for their performances this term.
"How many times has David De Gea won it since Sir Alex [Ferguson] left? I’m going to go for De Gea, to be honest with you," Neville told manutd.com.
"The only other two I could think of would be Fred and Ronaldo. We’d be in dire straits without Ronaldo’s goals but I think, without De Gea, we’d be dead!
"I could say Ronaldo… Who’s the favourite, is it Ronaldo? I’d go De Gea, Ronaldo, then Fred, in that order," he added.
