And according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, the German-born Sierra Leonean defender has reached a verbal agreement to join Real Madrid on a free transfer.

Although Ancelotti is said to have confidence in Eder Militao, Nacho, and David Alaba, he believes Rudiger’s arrival will solidify his team’s defence.

Rudiger’s arrival would also allow David Alaba to move to the left-back, a position that has become problematic due to injury issues with Ferland Mendy and Marcelo.

Ralf Rangnick's charges are currently placed sixth on the standings with 54 points, six points off a Champions League spot.

They are currently facing stiff competition from the likes of Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal in their bid to play in Europe's elite football competition next season.
