Thomas Tuchel's men had to stage a dramatic comeback twice during the encounter to secure a ticket for the quarters.

Luton nearly upset Chelsea

The hosts had a blistering start into the tie as they took a lead inside two minutes of action via Reece Burke.

The 25-year-old broke the deadlock after beating Malang Sarr to a header on the edge of the six-yard box before flicking a header across a rooted Kepa.

Saul Niguez gave Chelsea a lifeline moments before the half-hour mark as he drew the Premier League giants level with his first goal for the side with a brilliant effort into the bottom right from the edge of the box.

Harry Cornick restored Luton's lead five minutes before the break as he slotted home powerfully into the bottom right.

Chelsea stages comeback

However, upon the resumption of the second half, Tuchel's charges staged a dramatic comeback to put the game to bed.

Timo Werner and Romelu Lukaku were all involved in the comeback, with both forwards finding the back of the net.

Werner was first to be involved in the 68th minute as he slotted gracefully into the bottom right.

Lukaku completed the comeback 10 minutes later, firing home the ultimate match-winner to ensure the tie ends 3-2 in favour of Chelsea.

Chelsea, Liverpool named favourites for UCL

Earlier, Sports Brief reported Paul Merson has backed Liverpool and Chelsea to go all the way in this season's Champions League.

Despite the presence of Man City, PSG, and Bayern Munich in the competition, Merson contends the two Carabao Cup finalists have what it takes to win the UCL.

Merson cited the two teams' solid defences as the key that could catapult them to European glory this term.
