The Toffees are understood to be lining up the Englishman to take charge of the club following the recent sacking of Rafa Benitez.

According to Daily Mail, a formal announcement is expected to be made in the next 24 hours.

This would be Lampard's first return to football management, almost a year after he was sacked by Chelsea.

The task of assembling a backroom staff for the former midfielder has since begun, with Chelsea assistant coaches Joe Edwards and Anthony Barry expected to join Lampard at Goodinson Park.

Lampard's immediate assignment will be to lift the club's spirits, with the Merseysiders currently placed 16th and four points off relegation.

The 43-year-old's first match in charge will be an FA Cup fourth-round fixture at home against Brentford.

He will then face two vital Premier League games which could determine if Everton is dragged into a relegation battle.

The fixtures include an away tie against Newcastle who are pushing for survival and Leeds United.

Lampard, meanwhile, is expected to be backed with transfers before the window shuts, with Man United midfielder Donny van de Beek linked.

Chelsea, Man United battle for Barca star

Earlier, Sports Brief reported Barcelona outcast Ousmane Dembele has courted interest from Premier League giants Man United and Chelsea who reportedly want to sign him before the transfer deadline.

The ex-Borussia Dortmund star is facing an uncertain future at Camp Nou, with reports suggesting the Catalan giants have asked him to find a new club

Barca are believed to be more than willing to cut their losses and offload the 24-year-old for just £18million.
