Rangers' bid for the Scottish Premiership title has suffered a significant setback with the news that Leon Balogun will miss this weekend's crucial Old Firm Derby against Celtic.

The 35-year-old Nigerian defender was forced off the pitch at half-time in the 4-1 play-offs victory over Kilmarnock and his back injury is expected to keep him sidelined.

Balogun's absence is a major blow for the Gers, who are desperate to close the three-point gap at the top of the table Scottish top flight standings.

The defender had been enjoying a run of starts in recent weeks, but the injury has opened the door for Ben Davies to make his mark.

Per Soccernet, the man who scored on his debut for the club after replacing the Nigerian is reportedly set to retain his place in the starting XI alongside John Souttar.

Philippe Clement will want to get Balogun back to full fitness in time for the Scottish Cup final on May 25, also against Celtic.

With only three games left to play in the SPFL season, a win this weekend is crucial for their title hopes.

Balogun eyes Rangers contract extension

The Super Eagles outcast's injury comes at a critical time, as he is seeking a contract extension with the club.

As per TransferMarkt, the 35-year-old has featured in 18 games, with 17 starts, and remains eager to prolong his journey with the 55-time Scottish Champions.

Despite enjoying significant playing time earlier this season under Michael Beale, Balogun's opportunities dwindled following Clement's appointment.

Title-chasing Nigerians in Europe this season

Sports Brief also previously listed Balogun among the Nigerian players in Europe chasing titles this season.

A number of Super Eagles stars have emerged as key figures in their teams' pursuit of glory in the continent.

While some have already secured titles with their teams, others remain on the brink of clinching silverware.
