Finidi George's appointment as coach of the Super Eagles continues to spark positive and negative discussion across Nigeria's footballing community.

Although the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) announced the 53-year-old's appointment on April 29, reports suggest the necessary paperwork to formalise the announcement is yet to be completed.

The former Real Betis winger, who is currently engaged as head coach of Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) side, Enyimba, was reported to be scheduled to meet up with the federation's technical committee to finalise the details of his contracts.

However, it appears the scheduled meeting did not take place as planned. Reasons for the delay in the official signing of his coaching contract with the Nigerian national team have since come to light.

Why Finidi is yet to pen a contract as Super Eagles coach

A report from Brila.net suggests that the delay in formalising Finidi's contract as coach of the Super Eagles is primarily due to his current commitment to Enyimba.

While the NPFL club seems content with their coach's appointment as manager of the Super Eagles, the NFF are yet to reach an agreement with the Aba-based club regarding the buyout of his existing contract.

Having been Enyimba's coach since 2021, Finidi guided them to a league title victory in the 2022/23 football season.

The report also notes the additional challenges in selecting assistants and assembling backroom staff for Finidi, which appears to be a significant factor in why the new manager has not signed his contract yet.

Nigerian football fans are hopeful for a swift resolution to these issues as their crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying fixture against South Africa approaches.

Amunike explains Super Eagles coaching snub

Sports Brief also previously reported on Emmanuel Amunike explaining why he lost out on the coaching role.

The 53-year-old was touted as the front-runner for the position until the announcement of Finidi by the NFF.
