  • David de Gea left Manchester United last season at the expiration of his contract
  • He was replaced by Cameroonian goalkeeper Andre Onana from Inter Milan
  • Onana is enduring a difficult start to life at Old Trafford, with fans already missing de Gea

Manchester United fell to their sixth defeat 10 games into the 2023/24 season last night against Galatasaray in the second group stage game of the UEFA Champions League.

Goalkeeper Andre Onana's misplaced pass was complicit in getting midfielder Casemiro sent off for a second bookable offence. Mauro Icardi missed the penalty before scoring the winner with a chip over Onana.

This led to outrage by fans on social media that the Spanish goalkeeper should not have been let go after the Cameroonian conceded his 18th goal of the season.

Sports Brief compares de Gea final season stats with Onana's so far this season, both in passing and goalkeeping.

Passing stats

De Gea's major criticism last season was his inability to function as a modern goalkeeper by playing from the back. Fans came up with a theory that he impeded the team's style of play and believed replacing him with a ball-playing GK in Onana would solve the problem.

Unsurprisingly, the former Ajax goalie stands out in passing stats over his predecessor, winning three of three categories, according to Football Daily.

In his 12 years at Old Trafford, de Gea was one of the best shot-stoppers in the Premier League and the world. He won the Golden Boot with 17 clean sheets in his final season at the club.

Although not faultless, he won points for the team with his goalkeeping on multiple occasions, something his replacement has not done this season, as the Spaniard poses better goalkeeping stats in four categories.

According to Transfermarkt, United under Erik ten Hag last season scored 59 league goals and conceded 44, which showed the lack of goalscoring as a bigger problem than conceding. Rasmus Hojlund was signed to provide the goal, but Onana has underperformed in goalkeeping compared to de Gea.

It also proved that the criticism of de Gea impeding building from the back, which also limited attacking stats, is false, as the Red Devils have conceded more (18) than scored (12) this season.
