No fewer than 176 Nigerian players will compete for places in the main draw for the Lagos International Table Tennis Classics which starts today at the Molade Okoya-Thomas Hall of the Teslim Balogun Stadium.

The competition’s manager, John Peters, 128 players will compete in the men’s category, while 48 will jostle for spots in the women’s event.

To ensure that all the participating players have equal chance to make it to the main draw, the players in the men’s singles event have been drawn into 32 groups made up of four players in each group. The players with highest points in each group will secure a place in the main draw.

“Al players in each group will play one another in a round robin format. This will also apply to the women and junior events,” Peters said.

“But in the women’s event, the groups are 16, while we also have 16 in the boys’ junior while girls’ junior have eight groups.”

More than 20 states and 10 clubs will take part in the qualifiers.

Meanwhile, the Main Organising Committee has confirmed that 16 countries will be part of the championship with the main draw serving off on August 26.

South Africa, Chinese Taipei, Cameroun, Congo Brazzaville, Congo DRC, Ivory Coast, Egypt, Ghana, Lithuania, Senegal, Tunisia and Italy have been listed to feature in the tournament.
