Swiatek's road to the quarters

Iga Swiatek’s bid for a third French Open crown remains on track after her opponent, Lesia Tsurenko retired in their fourth-round match on Monday after playing just six games.

The Polish player was up 5-1 in the first set when the Ukrainian decided to pull the plug on their contest, per Tennis.com.

Tsurenko had a trainer and doctor visit her while trailing 1-4 in the opening set. She got broken at love in the next game, and that was the moment she knew she had to retire against Swiatek.

With the win, Swiatek booked a place in the quarterfinals at Roland Garros for the fourth consecutive year.

Next up for her is a last-eight clash with Coco Gauff. The 22-year-old will fancy her chances against the sixth-seeded American as she has won all of her six previous matches against her.

Swiatek won their most recent meeting in the semifinals of this year’s Dubai Championships, 6-4, 6-2. The two faced each other in last year's French Open final, with the former recording a comprehensive 6-1, 6-3 victory.

Coco Gauff's road to quarters

Coco Gauff stormed into the quarterfinals of the French Open with a 7-5, 6-2 win over Anna Karolina Schmiedlova on Monday, per Yahoo! Sports.

It was a remarkable performance from the 19-year-old, who needed one hour and 31 minutes to produce the straight-sets win.

It was an important victory for Gauff, who reached a Grand Slam quarterfinal for the fourth time in her young career.

Things are bound to get more challenging for the American, as standing in her way in the next round is three-time Grand Slam champion, Swiatek. She has yet to win a set against the Pole in their previous six meetings.

For Gauff to record a major shock against Swiatek, the teen star must limit her miscues. She committed 22 unforced errors in her fourth-round win against Schmiedlova.

That won’t do against the current champion, who is currently in the midst of an 11-match winning streak at Roland Garros.

Ruud and Rune renew rivalry

Sports Brief recently previewed the French Open quarterfinal between Casper Ruud and Holger Rune.

They recorded contrasting wins in the fourth round to set up a rematch of their quarterfinal last year.

At Roland Garros last season, Ruud defeated Rune in four sets in that contest to advance to the semis.
