  • It's been almost two weeks since Rihanna made a comeback with a breathtaking Super Bowl halftime performance
  • Preliminary numbers show the mother of one delivered on many fronts with her red outfit
  • The beauty mogul performed for 13 minutes, singing 12 of her major hit songs, including Work

You shouldn't feel left out if you still belong in the category of people who don't quite understand why the performers of Super Bowls Halftime shows don't get paid.

On face value, it does not make sense why the organisers don't pay the A-list artistes they get to perform during the annual, arguably biggest and most profitable event in US sports history.

But get it from us, the audience one gets and the subsequent benefits from the halftime shows is always worth the while.

Rihanna headlined the Super Bowl LVII halftime show between the Philadelphia Eagles and Kansas City Chiefs. For a star who hasn't performed in more than six years, a lot was expected and a lot was delivered.

She ain't a Bad Girl for no reason.

Cranking up the numbers

According to research done by fashion retailer Bohoo, Rihanna's all-red custom Loewe and Alaïa look led the search of red jump suits shooting up to over 520%. This is almost six times the number people who usually look up the same item.

During her 13-minute show at the State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, the searches for her MM6 low-top sneakers from Maison Margiela’s hit 5,000 during the performance alone. The red puffer jacket she donned had an 177% increase in searches.

Fenty Beauty

Known for her many skillsets, the 34-year-old applied her makeup right on stage from her now popular brand, Fenty. That subtle act that took no more than 5 seconds recorded a huge spike of 1860% in searches. Genius marketing.

Rihanna is not new to whipping and influencing fashion trends to her favour. Back in 2010, she set tongues rolling with the red hair dye. The Bohoo research shows that the dye still gets googled over 11,000 times monthly.

Won't be surprised if her Alaia coat of 2023 will still be the 'thing' when her first child is 15 years.

How many people watched Rihanna?

Crossroads Today puts the approximate number of people who watched Rihanna's performance at 119 million. This made it the second-most watched show after Katy Pery's show in 2015(though Fox News lists Perry's show as the second-most watched now).

What's certain, though is that the halftime show brought at least 5 million more viewers than the game itself, which was eventually won by Patrick Mahomes' Chiefs.

So, what does Rihanna get from all these? How does she 'pay' herself? The jury might still be out on how the LIft Me Up hitmaker is going to convert this into payday, apart from the massive searches of her fashion line and instant spike in her Spotify numbers. But here's what happened to past performers.

Past Super Bowl performers

Well, for starters, having more than 100 million people watching you is an achievement in itself. A week after gracing the 2022 show, as Billboard reports, Eminem's album "Curtain Call: The Hits" rose to number 10 in the Billboard 200 albums chart. Never mind that the album was a 2005 release.

In 2017, Lady Gaga saw her music sales spike bvy over 1000%, while Justin Timberlake recorded a percentage of 534% on the same day. Jenifer Lopez's and Shakira's performance in 2020 saw the two record a combined surge of 565%.

With Rihanna expect to make a comeback to her musical side soon, the Arizona show couldn't have given her a more perfect springboard. When compiling a list of the most interesting and captivating pregnancy reveals of celebrities, the nine-time Grammy award winner will be in contention as well.

This was just in case you ever needed a reminder that sports does pay. Not just that active athletes but the secondary participants as well.

Bring on 2024!
