Very intriguing and talented athletes have appeared on the NFL Rookie of the Year winners' list for the past ten years. The competition for the award has been fierce, with several teams producing the league's young top players severally. However, over the past ten years, only a few teams have been able to have their players' names repeatedly appear on the list.

The first awards, in 1967, were awarded to Detroit Lions Mel Farr (offence) and Lem Barney (defence). One of the intriguing aspects of this award is that both players were on the same team.

How many NFL Rookie of the Year awards are there?

Since 1967, there have been two main Rookie of the Year awards yearly, one for offensive players and another for defenders. A panel of 50 Associated Press (AP) employees from across the country who regularly cover the league chooses the winners.

When is NFL Rookie of the Year announced?

Voting takes place just before the playoffs, after the regular season. Since 2011, along with the Pepsi NFL Rookie of the Year Award and other AP awards, the winners of the AP Rookie of the Year awards have been revealed at the NFL Honors presentation the night before the Super Bowl. The AP awards are regarded as the NFL's official recognition.

Has a rookie ever won NFL MVP?

Jim Brown is the only rookie ever to win MVP in NFL history. The former offensive player was 21 years old in his rookie season in 1957.

The award sets to be one of the most important in the young player's career. Several great players were lucky to win the awards, and the greatness did not stop there.

2022: Brock Purdy | San Francisco 49ers

Purdy, the 49ers quarterback who began the season as the third-stringer, and managed to end up in the playoffs, is PFT’s choice for the NFL’s 2022 offensive rookie of the year.

Most football fans did not know who Purdy was until recently, or if they did, it was just because he was the last pick in the 2022 NFL draught, earning the moniker "Mr Irrelevant." But after both starter Trey Lance and backup Jimmy Garoppolo went down, the 49ers had no option but to turn to Purdy. He ended up being exceptional.

2021: Ja'Marr Chase | Cincinnati Bengals

Chase was an obvious choice for the honour. The star had 81 receptions, 13 touchdowns, and 1,455 receiving yards during the season, breaking Justin Jefferson's record. His former teammate at LSU had previously set the record with 1,440 yards.

2020: Justin Herbert | Los Angeles Chargers

Herbert was the first Chargers player to ever win the PFWA Rookie of the Year award after 57 seasons. In 15 starts, Herbert threw for 4,336 yards, 31 touchdowns, and only 10 interceptions. He broke Andrew Luck's record for the most passing touchdowns by a rookie and the records for total touchdowns (36) and completions (396).

2019: Kyler Murray | Arizona Cardinals

The No. 1 draught pick in the 2019 NFL draught flew under the radar a bit in his first season. He did not put up remarkable numbers, and the Cardinals won just five games to finish fourth in the NFC West. However, these likely distracted people's attention from his performance.

2018: Saquon Barkley | New York Giants

Saquon Barkley is also a former offensive NFL rookie of the year winner. In his first season, Barkley distinguished himself as one of the top running backs in the league, defeating other candidates like Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield to win the prize. The then-21-year-old performed all team duties expected of a contemporary back.

2017: Alvin Kamara | New Orleans Saints

Kamara, a Tennessee native selected with the 67th overall pick in the third round of the 2017 NFL Draft, quickly rose to the position of one of the league's most explosive offensive players. Along with 81 receptions for 826 yards and five additional touchdowns, he finished his rookie season with 728 rushing yards and eight rushing touchdowns on an NFL-best 6.1 yards per carry.

2016: Dak Prescott | Dallas Cowboys

Prescott, a Mississippi State product selected in the fourth round, wasn't anticipated to play a single snap for the Cowboys as a rookie, much less start every game. The then 23-year-old thrived in the spotlight despite taking on arguably the most challenging job in all sports. Prescott made 67.8% of his passes for 3,667 yards, 23 touchdowns, and four interceptions in 16 games.

2015: Todd Gurley | Los Angeles Rams

In 13 games, the Georgia product rushed for 1,106 yards and 10 touchdowns and added 21 receptions for 188 yards. He made a shaky debut against the Pittsburgh Steelers before breaking out in a big way after missing the first two games while recovering from surgery. He became one of football's best young playmakers after rushing for more than 100 yards in each of his subsequent four games.

2014: Odell Beckham, Jr. | New York Giants

Beckham's statistics are even more impressive because he only participated in 12 games after missing the first four of the season due to a hamstring injury. Through 12 games, the former LSU standout set an NFL record for receiving yards.

2013: Eddie Lacy | Green Bay Packers

The Offensive Rookie of the Year award was given to Lacy in 2013, making him the first Packer to receive it since running back John Brockington in 1971. He also surpassed Ryan Grant's 2009 1,000-yard rushing total for the Packers. Eddie was ranked 90th by his fellow players on the NFL Top 100 Players of 2014.

And throughout the season, the cocky rookie backed up his talk with solid performances against some of the top wide receivers in the NFL, including Stefon Diggs, Ja'Marr Chase, Tyreek Hill, Justin Jefferson, Justin Jefferson of Minnesota, D.K. Metcalf of Seattle, and Ja'Marr Chase of Cincinnati (Buffalo).

He consistently ranked as the team's best player and is expected to be the defensive backbone of Washington for many years.

Leonard ranked second among rookies in the league for sacks with seven, leading the league in both total tackles (163) and solo tackles (111).

Out of a possible 50 first-place votes, he received 45. The Saints selected Lattimore in the 11th overall round out of Ohio State. He was immediately pegged as the team's starting cornerback after a 2016 campaign.

Marcus Peters, a cornerback, was selected by the Kansas City Chiefs with the 18th overall pick in the previous NFL Draft, and as a result, he was named the league's Defensive Rookie of the Year by the Pro Football Writers of America. Peters wowed for the Chiefs in 2015, contributing significantly to the team's 11-game winning streak, 11-5 regular-season record, and return to the postseason.

Donald, a University of Pittsburgh player, was selected by the NFL as the 13th overall pick in 2014. Aaron Donald nearly single-handedly turned around the St. Louis Rams' defensive fortunes during the season. He was honoured for his outstanding debut by being named the AP Defensive Rookie of the Year.

2013: Sheldon Richardson | New York Jets

Richardson ends our list of the last 10 defensive NFL Rookie of the Year winners. Even though the New York Jets had their ups and downs in 2013, Sheldon Richardson's performance as a rookie defensive lineman was a genuine plus.

With an impressive 77 tackles, 11 tackles for loss, and 3.5 sacks on the season, the 6'3", 294-pound Missouri product was an essential part of the Jets' dominant defensive line. Given the amount of grunt work he did in the trenches, his numbers weren't quite as gaudy as some of his competitors, but his impact was always clear.

The NFL Rookie of the Year award recognises young athletes with the potential to dominate the league for many years. Most of them grow up to become their team's most valuable players.
