A few years ago, the center in the NBA was a marquee position. Big men like George Mikan, Bill Russell, Hakeem Olajuwon, Shaquille O'Neal, and Kareem Abdul Jabbar carried their teams to championship glory.

The position has evolved significantly. Stephen Curry's incredible influence of the game forced centers to adapt and become all-round players to have an impact on a team.

Denver Nuggets center Nikola Jokic is the first center to win the MVP award since O'Neal in 2000. He has won the last two awards and is in contention to win it thrice for the first time since Larry Bird 37 years ago.

But who have been the best centers this season? Here are the top 10 centers in the NBA this season.

10. Rudy Gobert

Gobert's trade to the Minnesota Timberwolves from the Utah Jazz hasn't worked out as he expected. Nevertheless, the 30-year-old Frenchman remains the best rim protector in basketball. The Timberwolves have the 10th-best defensive rating in the league. Therefore, his impact, although minimal, is being felt. Can he help his team secure a playoff spot?

9. Myles Turner

Indiana Pacers center Myles Turner has quietly been producing commendable performances. Alongside Gobert, he's been one of the best rim protectors in the league. Combine that with his ability from deep and you have a solid big man. He is in the midst of his most productive season as a professional, averaging 18 points per game, 7.5 rebounds and 2.3 blocks per game.

8. Jarrett Allen

The Cleveland Cavaliers are one of the stories of the season and much of that is owed to Jarret Allen. The former Brooklyn Nets big man is averaging 14.4 points and 9.9 rebounds per game. He's looking to play a key role in the Cavaliers' postseason run.

7. Brook Lopez

Milwaukee Bucs center Brook Lopez is getting deserved attention despite playing in the same team as Giannis Antetokounmpo. His transformation from a low post player to a 3-and-D big man has been astonishing, per SB Nation. He will play another crucial role in Bucks' title aspirations.

6. Deandre Ayton

The 2018 NO. 1 first overall pick in the 2018 draft and Phoenix Suns big man is now an established name among centers in the NBA. He has averaged a double-double since he got drafted.

5. Bam Adebayo

Adebayo's importance to the Miami Heat has slowly grown over the years. He is a three-time All-Defensive team member. His points per game has improved ever since he made his debut in the NBA in 2017.

4. Anthony Davis

For the last few years in the league, Anthony Davis has been plagued by injuries. However, he showed early this season why he is a top player in the NBA. He is having another solid campaign, averaging 25.9 points per game. Can he help the Los Angeles Lakers secure a playoff spot?

3. Domantas Sabonis

The Sacramento Kings are on the verge of securing a playoff spot for the first time since 2006. Domantas Sabonis and De'Aaron Fox have been the stand-out players for the Kings this season. In 73 games this season, the 26-year-old has registered a double-double in 61, per StatMuse.

2. Joel Embiid

The Philadelphia 76ers superstar is the NBA leader in points per game. He's averaging 33.3 points and is the front-runner for the 2022/23 NBA MVP award. Can he beat Jokic to win his first-ever MVP award?

1. Nikola Jokic

Jokic has been the best player in the NBA for most of the 2022/23 season. He is averaging 24.9/11.9/9.9, helping the Nuggets to the best record in the Western Conference. He is undoubtedly one of the two best centers in the league.

Embiid dominates against Cavs

Sports Brief recently reported on the Sixers’ win over the Cavs.

Embiid was in excellent form in that contest, scoring 36 points and grabbing 18 rebounds.

He benefited from a replay review, which overturned a sixth foul called on him.
