Jokić's professional career started at the youth level when he played for Vojvodina Srbijagas. He was a good player, attracting bigger teams which led him to join the Mega Vizura in the Summer of 2012. He was elevated from the junior team to the senior team in the Serbian League, where he averaged 18.4 points, 10.4 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game before he left the team to pursue an NBA career.

On 26 June 2014, he was selected by the Denver Nuggets with the 41st overall pick in the 2014 draft. His debut came a season later after being drafted, where he also signed a contract after averaging 8.0 points and 6.2 rebounds after five Summer League games for the team.

Jokić's breakout season came in the 2018 - 2019 season when he signed a five-year $148 million maximum contract extension with the Nuggets. In the second game of the season, he recorded 35 points, 12 rebounds and 11 assists in a 119-91 win over the Phoenix Suns.

He joined Wilt Chamberlain as the only player in history to record a triple-double with 30 or more points without missing a field goal. He also became the second Nugget to record a triple-double in the season's first two games.

During the same period, he was named Western Conference Player of the Week, becoming the sixth player in franchise history to win the award more than three times. He was also named Serbian Player of the year by the Basketball Federation of Serbia. Following his performance during the season, he was named to the All-NBA First Team, earning selection to his first All-NBA Team.

The Serbian International performed incredibly in the 2019-2020 season, earning his second consecutive All-star honours. This made him the second Nugget to have back-to-back honours since Anthony in 2011.

During the same season, he joined Tim Duncan and Kevin Garnett as the only players to post 20-rebound triple-doubles in the postseason. Unfortunately, the Nuggets went ahead to be eliminated in the Western Conference Finals by the eventual NBA Champions, Los Angeles Lakers.

Jokić performed amazingly well the following season and was handed the MVP trophy, becoming the second Centre to win the award after Shaquille O'neal in 2000 and the first player in Denver Nuggets franchise history. In the 2021-2022 season, he finished the regular season averaging 27.1 points, 13.8 rebounds and 7.9 assists.

In addition, he was honoured as the league MVP for the second year this season. He became the thirteenth player to win the award in a row and the second European to win the award more than once, after Giannis Antetokounmpo.
