Will he or won't he? That's the question being asked by many fans as rumours that Lewis Hamilton is considering retiring from Formula 1 continue to swirl.

Lewis is contracted to Mercedes until the end of the 2023 season but has remained silent over the rumours which began after the controversial Abu Dhabi race that saw Max Verstappen being crowned champion.

Mercedes boss Toto Wolff first got many believing the rumours when he spoke to SkySports about how disillusioned the team felt after the season-ending race.

"Lewis and I are disillusioned at the moment. We are not disillusioned of the sport, we love the sport with every bone in our body and we love it because the stopwatch never lies.
"It's going to take a long time for us to digest what has happened on Sunday. I don't think we will ever overcome it, that's not possible."

Taking to Twitter recently though, Mercedes seemed to hint that Lewis would return to compete this season as he looks to win a record eighth Formula 1 World Championship.

Many fans are hoping that Lewis does indeed return to the ring and resume his rivalry with Verstappen. Others though wish Lewis would make his mind up and stop the theatrics.

Leon J Steyn:

"This is F1 - not The Kardashians. Please stop the attempt at drama. If he wants to retire because he lost (after winning 7 titles!) then let him retire. Just make this nonsense stop."

@AlfHucker3

"You fell apart when you faced the biggest challenge in RB and Verstappen. Hamilton was not perfect but the teams strategies let him down much more. If Perez performed like he did at the back end of the season, you would have won nothing. I think he should retire, fresh start."

@kubee99:

"No one is going to recognise Lewis in the next season, he'll be 10 times stronger than ever and he's gonna give the best season ever (for teamlh obviously) and of course he will get his 8th championship."

@peco_train

"Love this team! This pair will be back next year to drive the team forward again and I can’t see anything but great things happening on track with the #W13 Total faith in Lewis, George and the team delivering more championships this coming yea"

The 2022 season begins with the Bahrain Grand Prix in March.

Sir Lewis Hamilton: Grand Prix Star Knighted Despite Losing Out on 8th Championship

In other motorsport news, Lewis Hamilton has been knighted at the age of 36 for his contribution to sports and representation of England on the global arena, Sports Brief earlier reported. He was handed the honour by Prince Charles for being one of the United Kingdom's most successful sportsmen.

Hamilton is not a resident of the United Kingdom, he relocated to Monaco in 2021 and as a result, his knighthood was recorded in the overseas category. The prestigious award was presented to Hamilton days after he fell short of winning his 8th Formula One championship, according to The Guardian.

Max Verstappen was able to win the final Grand Prix that was shrouded in controversy after a late safety car destroyed Lewis Hamilton's lead, allowing Max to take the honours in the last lap of the race.
