What is a staph infection?

A staph infection is caused by bacteria called staphylococcus, the NHS noted. It most often affects the skin and tends to go away on its own.

In more serious cases, it needs to be treated with antibiotics. More serious cases can also lead to blood poisoning and a bad case can be fatal.

How bad was Poirier's infection?

Doctors struggled to treat the infection, as none of the antibiotics seemed to work initially. The infection was starting to spread as well, and even Poirier was getting concerned about how serious the situation was.

On the road to recovery

Poirier took to his Twitter account to confirm that some antibiotics were fighting back against the infection at last, and also revealed he would soon be going home.

He will now have to continue on a course of strong antibiotics and stay off his foot for as long as possible, until the infection is totally clear.

As reported by MMA Fighting, Dillashaw made the decision to retire after he was forced to undergo surgery to repair his damaged shoulder.

Zahabi: stoppage saved Adesanya's career

The debate rages on about referee Marc Goddard stopping the fight, in Israel Adesanya's middleweight title fight at UFC 281.

Goddard called the match off in the fifth round, as challenger Alex Pereira rattled Adesanya with a couple of shots that appeared to have hurt him.

Pereira was declared the winner by technical knockout and was also crowned the new UFC middleweight champion.
