Zaidu Sanusi and Terem Moffi Win Primeira Liga Title as FC Porto Edge Alverca to Clinch Portuguese Championship

FC Porto are Portuguese champions once again, and two Super Eagles players were part of the squad that sealed the title at the Estádio do Dragão on 3 May 2026, with a narrow 1-0 win over Alverca confirming their position at the top of the Primeira Liga standings.

Left-back Zaidu Sanusi made a timely return to action for the decisive fixture, having sat out Porto’s previous league match with a muscle injury. The Nigerian defender was passed fit ahead of the title-clincher and featured in a Porto side that kept a clean sheet in the second half to protect their single-goal advantage and mathematically secure the championship ahead of both Benfica and Sporting CP.

Sanusi’s involvement in the title win adds another chapter to what has been a productive spell at the club. The Super Eagles defender contributed one goal and one assist across 17 Primeira Liga appearances during the 2025/26 campaign. Saturday’s triumph represents his second league title with Porto, reinforcing the defender’s standing as one of the more decorated Nigerians currently playing club football in Europe.

Striking a different note was Terem Moffi, who did not feature in the match itself, remaining an unused substitute throughout the 90 minutes. Despite the lack of playing time in the final fixture, the Nigerian forward’s place in Porto’s title-winning squad means the 2025/26 Primeira Liga medal is the first league championship of his professional career in Europe — a significant milestone for the forward who previously played for Lorient in Ligue 1 before his move to Portugal.

For Jose Mourinho, Porto’s title win carries an added dimension. The Portuguese tactician, who famously led Porto to back-to-back Primeira Liga titles in 2002 and 2003 before guiding the club to UEFA Champions League glory in 2004, now finds himself on the opposite end of a Porto championship celebration. Mourinho’s Benfica were among the sides unable to dislodge Porto from top spot this season, making Sanusi’s return to fitness and performance in the decisive game a pointed footnote to the rivalry.

Porto’s title also ends Sporting CP’s hopes of retaining any domestic supremacy, with the Lisbon club finishing outside the top position alongside Benfica as the Dragons claimed the Primeira Liga crown.

Beyond club football, the title win carries implications for both Sanusi and Moffi at international level. According to reports, both players are targeting inclusion in Nigeria’s squad for the upcoming Unity Cup fixtures, and their involvement in a championship-winning campaign is likely to strengthen their cases ahead of Super Eagles selection.

The Unity Cup, a tournament involving Nigeria and other invited nations, is expected to provide the Super Eagles coaching staff with an opportunity to assess their squad depth ahead of future continental and World Cup qualifying commitments. Championship form and fitness will be among the factors considered when the squad is named.
