Werder Bremen head coach Daniel Thioune has indicated that Nigerian striker Victor Boniface remains in contention for selection despite continuing his recovery from a serious knee injury, raising the possibility of a comeback at one of the most critical points in the club’s season.

Boniface has been absent from competitive action since December 2025, when he underwent surgery on a knee injury that sidelined him for several months. The Super Eagles forward has since returned to individual training and is gradually building toward full fitness, though he has not yet resumed full team sessions.

Asked about the striker’s availability ahead of Bremen’s upcoming North German derby against Hamburger SV, Thioune was cautious but notably inclusive. “We’re not ruling any player out, not even Victor,” the Bremen coach said, adding that any final decision on his involvement would be contingent on how the 24-year-old responds in training sessions leading up to the fixture.

Despite the encouraging signal from the coaching staff, Thioune was careful to manage expectations. Boniface is not considered ready to start a match at this stage, and should he feature, it would most likely be as a substitute, with the club taking a measured approach to managing his reintegration.

The timing of a potential return carries considerable weight. Bremen are currently entrenched in a relegation battle, sitting just above the Bundesliga 2 drop zone following a difficult run of results. The derby against Hamburger SV — themselves not entirely safe from relegation pressure — represents an urgent opportunity for points, and the atmosphere surrounding the fixture ensures its significance extends well beyond the usual rivalry.

Bremen’s task is further complicated by the suspension of captain Marco Friedl, who will miss the derby, stripping the side of an influential presence at the back. In Boniface’s extended absence, the attacking responsibilities have largely fallen to Romano Schmid and Justin Njinmah, both of whom have contributed but have not been able to replicate the Nigerian’s impact in front of goal.

Boniface had been one of Bayer Leverkusen‘s most prominent attacking figures before joining Werder Bremen on loan, and his ability to hold up play, create chances, and convert in tight situations makes him a different option to what the squad currently offers. Even a brief appearance from the bench could alter the dynamics of a match Bremen cannot afford to lose.

The North German derby between Werder Bremen and Hamburger SV is one of German football’s most fiercely contested fixtures, with both clubs carrying strong historical identities and passionate supporter bases. For Bremen, a positive result could provide vital breathing room in the standings; for Boniface, a return to the pitch would mark the end of what has been a difficult and prolonged spell on the sidelines for both player and club.
