Wayne Rooney has handed Manchester City the psychological edge in the Premier League title race, pointing to their established winning pedigree as a key differentiator between the two sides vying for the championship.
The former Manchester United and England captain made his assessment following City’s commanding 3-0 win over Chelsea, a result that trimmed Arsenal‘s lead at the top of the table to six points. Crucially, Guardiola’s side also retain a game in hand over the Gunners.
“I think City will have the edge on that, just purely the manager and players they’ve got,” Rooney said. “They know how to win the title and have a manager who knows how to do it.”
Rooney’s reasoning centres on familiarity with high-pressure run-ins. Manchester City have won six Premier League titles since Pep Guardiola’s arrival in 2016, including four consecutive championships between 2021 and 2024. Arsenal, by contrast, have not lifted the top-flight trophy since the 2003-04 Invincibles season — a wait of over two decades.
While Arsenal have maintained first place for much of the current campaign, Rooney cautioned that a dip in form could carry consequences beyond the scoreline. “They will be able to stay a little calmer than the Arsenal players,” he said when drawing a comparison between the two squads.
He elaborated on how negative momentum can compound during a title run-in: “When you go on a run and lose a few games, you start thinking, ‘Where’s the next goal, the next win going to come from?’ That negative mindset really has an impact on your performance.”
The warning carries some context for Arsenal. Mikel Arteta’s side have experienced title heartbreak in recent seasons, finishing second in both 2022-23 and 2023-24 after leading at various stages of those campaigns. The psychological toll of those near-misses remains a point of scrutiny heading into the final weeks of the 2025-26 season.
With the gap now at six points and City holding a game in hand, the mathematical picture has shifted considerably in favour of the Manchester club. Should City win that outstanding fixture, the deficit would reduce to three points — a single win separating the two sides.
The title race is entering a critical phase, with both clubs expected to face demanding fixtures before the season concludes. How each squad manages pressure, squad depth, and consistency in front of goal is likely to determine where the trophy ultimately lands.
