Borussia Dortmund succumbed to their second defeat of pre-season and their second against a Spanish side.

Borussia Dortmund dominated the first half of their pre-season friendly game against Villareal but had nothing to show for it.

The Spanish side, however, took a lead into the break, despite only having two shots on target in the first 45 minutes.

The German side started the game stronger and enjoyed good possession in the middle of the park. Julian Brandt controlled the centre of the park, trying to feed Marco Reus up front.

Dortmund’s approach saw them create numerous chances but fail to finish any of them. Reus, Brandt and Donyell Malen each had more than one attempt either scuppered by the defenders or saved by Gerónimo Rulli in the Villareal goal.

Villareal’s main route of attack was trying to play long balls through for Gerard Moreno or Arnaut Danjuma to run onto. The tactic failed to work until the final minute of the first half when Moreno found himself onside and behind the defenders.

The forward burst into the box and fired a shot which was deflected away by Alexander Meyer. Unfortunately for Dortmund, the ball deflected back into the path of Moreno who buried it into the top corner of the net.

Villareal started the second half as they ended the first. The Yellow Submarine pushed forward from the start of the second 45 minutes and could have got a second had someone got onto Alfonso Pedraza’s cross. A few minutes later they had another attempt cleared off the line and then Moreno blasted a shot wide not long after that.

Villareal would be rewarded for their constant pressure when Samuel Chukwueze doubled their lead just after the hour mark. The Nigerian player was fed the ball in the box but surrounded by two Dortmund players. He turned smartly to give himself space to shoot and curled the ball out of the reach of Meyer.

Dortmund had large spells with the ball in the second half but once again failed to do anything with it. Their best chance came in the 83rd minute when Youssoufa Moukoko fired a shot straight at Rulli. The Dortmund forward had both sides of the goal to aim for but instead could only find the keeper’s legs.

Chukwueze then almost made it three but his curled effort hit the post and bounced away. That would be the last effort of the game as Villareal saw out the game to claim victory 2-0.

Gennaro Gattuso's Valencia overpower German outfit Borussia Dortmund in preseason friendly in Austria

Borussia Dortmund and Valencia CF gave their respective fans a taste of what’s to come when they contested a pre-season friendly at the Cashpoint Arena in Austria.

The German side were eager to prove they are still a force to be reckoned with without Erling Haaland while the Spanish team were eager to impress their new coach, Gennaro Gattuso.

It was Dortmund who had the better chances in the first half, going closer on more occasions, but it was Valencia that took a lead into the break.
