Villareal sent Juventus crashing out of the UEFA Champions League Last 16 in the most stunning of ways.

The Yellow Submarine swept aside the Old Lady 3-0 in what was the original ambush job at the Juventus Stadium in Turin, Italy. Penalties from Gerardo Moreno and Arnaut Danjuma as well as a strike from Pau Torres saw the Spaniards complete a 4-1 aggregate victory over the much more fancied Italians.

This remarkable victory ensures that Unai Emery's Villareal - the reigning UEFA Europa League champions - reached the quarterfinals of the Champions League for only the third time in their history. Juventus, meanwhile, have to wait another year in their prolonged hope to win a trophy they last put their hands on in 1996.

The victory had the hallmarks of Atletico Madrid's excellent win away against Manchester United away at Old Trafford on Tuesday. Villareal was composed in defence, forcing errors out of the hosts, before pouncing whenever the opportunity arose.

Moreno's opener came after Francis Coquelin went down in the penalty area, under Daniel Rugani’s challenge. He made it look as dramatic as possible, but it was indeed a foul. The decision required VAR after the referee waved appeals away.

Torres sealed the deal after a corner during which he scuffed the ball into the top corner after poor defending from Juve.

Danjuma then placed the berry on a nicely iced cake with a penalty that came about from a shot that was handled by Juventus defender Matthijs de Ligt.

The unfancied Villareal now goes into Friday's last eight draw alongside Manchester City, Liverpool, Chelsea, Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid, Bayern Munich and Benfica.

Diego Simeone discloses the big secret that helped Atletico Madrid send Man United out of UCL

Diego Simeone has explained that Manchester United's susceptibility to counter attacks provided his wards at Atletico Madrid with the perfect route to goal in the Champions League knockout.

As reported on Sports Brief, Atletico Madrid on Tuesday night, 15 March, sent Manchester United out of the Champions League after recording a 1-0 win at Old Trafford with Renan Lodi netting the only goal that condemned the Red Devils to defeat.
