Galatasaray will have to delay their title celebrations after suffering a humbling 4-1 defeat to Samsunspor on Saturday evening, a result that has postponed what would have been their fourth successive Turkish Süper Lig triumph.
The Istanbul side arrived at Samsunspor with significant momentum, having dismantled rivals Fenerbahçe in their previous fixture. A single victory was all that stood between Galatasaray and a historic fourth consecutive league title, but the hosts had other ideas, delivering a dominant second-half performance to inflict a damaging defeat on Okan Buruk’s side.
Galatasaray made a promising start to the contest. Just nine minutes in, Yunus Akgun spotted Samsunspor goalkeeper Okan Kocuk off his line and executed a composed lob from the edge of the penalty area to put the visitors ahead. The lead, however, was short-lived. Samsunspor drew level when Marius drove an unstoppable effort into the bottom right corner, restoring parity before the interval.
The second half proved disastrous for Galatasaray. Cherif Ndiaye gave the home side the lead with a powerful strike into the top right corner, and the evening took a further turn for the worse when Galatasaray were reduced to ten men following the dismissal of Gunay Guvenc shortly after conceding.
With the numerical advantage, Samsunspor took control of proceedings. Marius doubled his tally to make it 3-1, before Ndiaye added a fourth to complete a comprehensive victory for the home team. Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen, who led the Galatasaray attack from the outset, created several attempts on goal but was unable to exert the influence needed to alter the outcome.
The defeat means Galatasaray must now wait until at least their next fixture before confirming the title. Should they secure the championship, it would represent a fourth consecutive Süper Lig crown — a feat that underscores the club’s period of domestic dominance under Buruk’s management.
Osimhen, who joined Galatasaray on loan from Napoli, has been a central figure in the club’s title push this season. The Super Eagles forward is among the players set to benefit from the club’s reported financial windfall tied to their league success, according to reports. His performances in Istanbul have continued to attract widespread attention, including a much-discussed moment in the Fenerbahçe fixture when he reportedly ceded a penalty to teammate Yilmaz.
Galatasaray remain firmly in control of the Süper Lig standings despite the setback, and the title is expected to be confirmed in the coming matchdays. Samsunspor’s victory, meanwhile, provides a significant boost to their own campaign as they look to climb the table in the final weeks of the season.
