Barcelona’s pursuit of Victor Osimhen is gaining momentum, though the financial reality of securing the Super Eagles striker remains a formidable obstacle. The Nigerian forward’s price tag has surpassed €100 million, a figure that places considerable strain on the Catalan club’s already constrained financial structure.
According to reports, Lamine Yamal has emerged as an internal advocate for the signing, with the Spanish winger reportedly viewing Osimhen as the ideal attacking complement. The 26-year-old Osimhen has delivered one of his most productive campaigns to date, registering 26 goals across all competitions this season — a return that has cemented his status as one of Europe’s most coveted forwards.
Barcelona’s interest in a new centre-forward is also driven by the age and workload concerns surrounding Robert Lewandowski. The veteran Polish striker’s demanding schedule and advancing years have prompted the club to seek a long-term solution up front. Osimhen’s capacity to stretch defensive lines and generate space — qualities that directly benefit wide attackers such as Yamal — has been identified as a key attribute.
The timing of any potential move is closely linked to Barcelona’s early exit from the UEFA Champions League, following their elimination by Atletico Madrid. That result has reportedly accelerated internal discussions around a summer squad overhaul, with sources suggesting up to five players could be made available for transfer to generate the necessary funds.
Defender Jules Kounde is understood to be among the most saleable assets, with several Premier League clubs reportedly monitoring his situation. Winger Ferran Torres, currently operating as a squad rotation option rather than a first-choice selection, is another candidate for departure. Midfielder Frenkie de Jong — whose wage demands have long been a source of tension — is also reportedly under consideration, with his sale offering the dual benefit of a transfer fee and significant salary relief.
Young midfielder Marc Casado could additionally be allowed to leave the club in order to secure consistent first-team football. Furthermore, Robert Lewandowski’s contract situation means his potential departure at the end of the current deal would provide indirect financial relief, reducing the wage burden without necessarily generating a transfer fee.
The collective movement of these players, should Barcelona proceed, would represent one of the more significant squad reconstructions in the club’s recent history. Osimhen has experience operating at the highest level, having previously been central to Napoli’s Serie A title-winning campaign in the 2022-23 season — their first Scudetto in over three decades. He currently operates on loan at Galatasaray from Napoli, with his future beyond the current season remaining unresolved.
The forthcoming summer transfer window is expected to clarify Barcelona’s intentions, with the club reportedly positioning Osimhen as the centrepiece of their attacking rebuild heading into the 2026-27 season.
