Galatasaray’s bid to clinch a third consecutive Süper Lig title has been put on hold after a calamitous 4-1 defeat to Samsunspor on Friday, May 2, 2026, a result that was significantly shaped by a high-profile error from Nigeria striker Victor Osimhen.
The Istanbul club had arrived at the Samsun 19 Mayıs Stadium requiring only one win to mathematically confirm their domestic championship. Instead, they departed on the wrong end of a heavy scoreline that exposed deep vulnerabilities within the squad.
The pivotal moment came in the 68th minute. Osimhen, attempting to recover from a heavy first touch, played an underhit back-pass that fell well short of goalkeeper Günay Güvenç. The veteran shot-stopper was forced to sprint well beyond his penalty area to intervene, and in doing so brought down the onrushing Samsunspor forward as the last line of defence. The referee had no hesitation in producing a straight red card, reducing Galatasaray to ten men with over 20 minutes still to play.
It should be noted that Okan Buruk’s side were already in difficulty before Osimhen’s miscue, trailing 2-1 at the time of the incident. However, Güvenç’s dismissal effectively eliminated any realistic prospect of a recovery. The depleted side conceded twice more in the closing stages to complete a damaging 4-1 reverse.
Osimhen, who joined Galatasaray on loan from Napoli ahead of the 2024-25 season before the arrangement was extended, has been one of the standout performers in the Turkish top flight. The Super Eagles forward had scored consistently throughout the campaign, making Friday’s lapse all the more uncharacteristic. According to reports, Osimhen publicly apologised for his performance following the final whistle.
The defeat has trimmed Galatasaray’s advantage at the top of the Süper Lig table, though the club retains a four-point lead with six points still available in the remaining fixtures. A home victory against Sivasspor next weekend would be sufficient to formally secure the title, regardless of results elsewhere.
Should Galatasaray go on to win the championship, it would represent their third successive Süper Lig crown — a feat that underlines the dominance the club has established under Buruk’s management. Finishing the season strongly will also be important for Osimhen, whose long-term future remains a subject of considerable speculation ahead of the summer transfer window.
Galatasaray’s next fixture against Sivasspor now takes on added significance, with the club eager to put the Samsunspor defeat behind them and bring the title race to a close on home turf.
