Manchester United legend, Wayne Rooney was among the first to react after his record as England’s all-time top goal-scorer was taken by Harry Kane on Thursday.

Kane made history in the 44th minute of the qualifier match against Italy, firing in from the penalty spot past Gianluigi Donnarumma for his 54th goal for England.

His strike enabled him to surpass Rooney, who has enjoyed the title of his country’s all-time top scorer since 2015 thanks to his 53 strikes in 13 years with the national team.

As reported on the Manchester United website, Rooney, upon seeing his record had been broken, took to Twitter with a classy message to the 29-year-old striker.

"Congratulations to @HKane on becoming @England’s all-time leading goalscorer," he wrote. "I knew it wouldn’t take long but that was quick."

Rooney was full of praise for Kane, calling him a great man, an unbelievable goal-scorer, and an England legend.

"Congrats Harry," he added.

Kane says record 'means everything'

Speaking on his feat, Kane, who has spent his entire professional career thus far at Tottenham Hotspur, said it meant everything to him.

"I was so excited to put the England shirt on and get back out here and get the campaign started for next year's Euros," he said as quoted by the BBC.

"It had to be a penalty and once it hit the back of the net, huge emotion. A magical moment."

The goal on Thursday will surely have felt good for Kane, who tied with Rooney during the 2022 World Cup but missed the chance to break the record then when the Three Lions were knocked out in the quarter-finals by France.
