  • Football fans were in agreement that Southampton should have never been awarded a penalty against Tottenham
  • The North Londoners squandered a 3-1 lead as the game at Saint Marys’ ended in a 3-3 draw
  • James Ward Prowse slotted in from 12 yards in second half added time after Maitland-Niles was adjudged to have been fouled in the box

Premier League refereeing was on the spotlight yet again on Saturday, March 18 as Tottenham blew a 3-1 lead to draw 3-3 against relegation-threatened Southampton.

After a fragmented first half, the game sprung to life in the second, with five goals being scored, including a controversial last minute Southampton penalty.

Tottenham’s Pedro Porro opened the scoring with a hammered shot into the roof of the net, but Southampton were back in the game 47 seconds into the second half thanks to Che Adams’ strike.

As reported on BBC, Theo Walcott, a former North Londoner with Arsenal, slotted in from Sekou Mara to make it 3-2, and with minutes of injury time to go, a contentious call was made by referee Simon Hooper.

Tottenham Pape Sarr inadvertently made contact with Maitland-Niles in the box, and a penalty was the result, with James-Ward Prowse slotting home for the Saints to claim an unlikely equalizer.

“Robbed”

On social media, fans were unconvinced of the penalty as they felt Maitland-Niles should have instead been booked for simulation.

“I'm happy that Spurs has dropped points but that was never a pen,” One fan said.
“Worst penalty decision of the season??? Southampton get a penalty for literally zero contact?” another added.
“Robbed by VAR, but our defense once again letting us down. 3-1 lead wasted to the bottom of the table team is absolutely ridiculous” Said another fan.

Richarlison distraught after injury

Sports Brief also reported on how distraught Richarlison was after suffering an early injury against Southampton.

Video of the aftermath of the latest injury has since gone viral on social media, and it shows Richarlison in tears as Harry Kane tries to console him.

Eventually, Richarlison went to the stands, and was spotted sitting with his teammates on the bench.
