  • Antonio Conte made a quadruple substitution in the North London derby, a rare move in football
  • The Italian was down to 10 men and trailing against Arsenal when he made the bold decision
  • Sections of Tottenham fans believe the move was rash however, and feel Conte had resorted to game management
  • Arsenal emerged 3-1 winners on Saturday to consolidate their lead at the top

Antonio Conte has been called out by a section of Tottenham fans for ‘giving up' during the North London derby on Saturday, October 1.

Spurs were comprehensively beaten by the league leaders 3-1 in a game that could have gone much differently were it not for individual errors on Tottenham’s side.

Arsenal took the lead through Thomas Partey’s sublime strike from outside the box, but the visitors restored parity through Harry Kane from the penalty spot.

Early in the second half, Gabriel Jesus capitalised on a mistake from Hugo Lloris to give his side the lead, but there was more drama to come.

Spurs found themselves down to 10 men, as Emerson Royal was given his marching orders for a tackle on fellow countryman Gabriel Martinelli.

Soon after, Tottenham were 3-1 down as Granit Xhaka secured the three points with a goal from inside the box.

Having gone two goals down, Conte responded by bringing in four players, taking off the likes of Heung Min Son and Richarlison.

Here is some reactions from the fans:

"I love how Conte rage quit the game and made 4 substitutions,"
"Those Spurs substitutions at 3-1 sum up exactly what Conte and his teams are all about. Nothing sustainable about that way of playing."
"Conte making five substitutions. What a cop-out!"
"With those substitutions it seems like Conte is settling for conceding three..."

What Conte said

After the game, Conte was the first to admit he resorted to damage limitation after his team went 3-1 down with 10 men.

“It was difficult after the red card because in the starting XI we played with three strikers. Then you have Perisic and to find the balance when you have 10 men and in this period they scored before we had made the substitutions," he said on BT Sport.

Conte calls out VAR for Emerson red card

Earlier, Sports Brief reported of how Conte hit out at VAR after Tottenham’s derby defeat against Arsenal.

Speaking after the game, Conte boldly questioned the decision to dismiss Emerson, saying key decisions in England were different from Italy.

"In England, I have to be honest, it's very difficult because they don't have the same line [threshold]," he said as quoted by Daily Mail.
