Teko Modise Slams Ademola Lookman Over Costly Miss in Atletico Madrid’s Champions League Semi-Final Draw with Arsenal

Ademola Lookman’s return from injury in Atletico Madrid‘s UEFA Champions League semi-final first leg against Arsenal ended in mixed fortunes, as the Nigerian forward played the full 90 minutes of a 1-1 draw on April 29, 2026, but was left to rue a glaring miss that drew sharp criticism from a prominent football analyst.

The 28-year-old, who had been sidelined briefly before being restored to Diego Simeone‘s starting eleven at the Wanda Metropolitano, found himself in a promising position inside the Arsenal penalty area in the 53rd minute. However, his close-range attempt lacked the required placement, allowing Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya to collect the shot comfortably — a moment that proved costly in a tightly contested tie.

Speaking on SuperSport, former Bafana Bafana captain Teko Modise was direct in his assessment of Lookman’s decision-making at the critical juncture. “He could have performed better. A remarkable save was made. Whenever he is shooting under such pressure, he needs to think a bit faster,” Modise said.

The South African legend elaborated on what he believed was a failure to select the optimal angle. “I believe he might have selected a better angle away from the goalkeeper to compel him to make an exceptional save,” Modise added. He also pointed to the lack of precision in shot placement as the primary reason Raya was able to make the stop with relative ease: “The shot he took was not far enough from Raya for him to make the stop, but those are the risks he also brings to the game.”

Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone also bemoaned Lookman’s missed opportunities after the match, with reports indicating the Argentine coach felt his side were the better team over the 90 minutes despite being held to a draw.

The criticism, while pointed, comes against the backdrop of a strong debut campaign for Lookman at the Metropolitano since his high-profile January transfer from Atalanta. The Super Eagles forward has contributed two goals and two assists across seven Champions League appearances this season — a return that underlines his importance to Simeone’s squad as the tie remains finely balanced ahead of the second leg at the Emirates Stadium.

Lookman’s move from Atalanta represented one of the more significant pieces of winter transfer business in European football this season, and his Champions League form has largely justified the investment. He was also instrumental in Atalanta’s Europa League triumph in the 2023-24 season, scoring a hat-trick in the final against Bayer Leverkusen — a performance that cemented his reputation as a big-game player.

With the aggregate score level at 1-1, both clubs will be aware that margins in the second leg could be razor-thin. For Lookman, the missed chance serves as a reminder of the fine line between decisive impact and missed opportunity at the highest level of European competition. Whether he can convert similar chances at the Emirates Stadium may well determine Atletico Madrid’s path to the Champions League final.
