Taiwo Awoniyi delivered one of the most significant individual performances of Nottingham Forest’s Premier League season on Saturday, scoring twice at Stamford Bridge as Nuno Espírito Santo’s side defeated Chelsea 3-1 to strengthen their grip on top-flight survival.

The result moves Forest to 16th place, six points above the relegation zone with three fixtures remaining — against Newcastle, Manchester United, and Bournemouth. Three more points from those games should be sufficient for survival given Forest’s superior goal difference over 18th-placed West Ham, while four points would mathematically guarantee their safety regardless of results elsewhere.

Awoniyi opened the scoring before the half-hour mark to give Forest the foothold they needed. He then drove into the Chelsea penalty area to win a spot-kick just before the interval, which Igor Jesus converted to make it 2-0 at half-time. The Nigerian completed his brace in the 61st minute, effectively ending the contest. The win was also Awoniyi’s 100th appearance in the Garibaldi, with Nottingham Forest’s official account marking the milestone on social media.

Chelsea had opportunities to alter the contest. Goalkeeper Matz Sels produced a crucial save to deny Cole Palmer from the penalty spot in the first half, a stop that proved pivotal in maintaining Forest’s two-goal cushion. Joao Pedro had a goal disallowed for offside before eventually pulling one back with a stoppage-time overhead kick, but by that stage the points were already secured.

The brace takes Awoniyi to four goals and one assist in 14 Premier League appearances this season — a return shaped largely by moments of impact rather than an uninterrupted run of games. Fellow Nigeria international Ola Aina was absent from the travelling squad for the Chelsea fixture, leaving Awoniyi as Forest’s sole Nigerian representative at Stamford Bridge.

For Forest, the result extends a run of three consecutive Premier League victories heading into the final stretch of the campaign. That momentum represents a considerable shift from the club’s situation a month ago, when relegation appeared a far more pressing concern. Forest now hold a five-point advantage over Tottenham in 17th place, meaning Spurs would require an unlikely sequence of results combined with a significant Forest collapse to overtake Nuno’s side.

Of the three remaining fixtures, the Manchester United and Bournemouth matches are considered the more realistic opportunities for points. The Newcastle fixture presents greater difficulty, but even a defeat in that game would leave Forest in a manageable position ahead of their final two outings. West Ham and Tottenham both require Forest to drop points to keep their own survival hopes alive — Saturday’s result makes that scenario considerably less likely.

Forest’s season has been defined by moments of individual quality at critical junctures. Awoniyi’s performance against Chelsea — scoring twice, creating a penalty, and imposing himself on one of the division’s more prominent venues — reinforces that pattern. The club is not yet mathematically safe, but the balance of probability has shifted clearly in their favour with the run-in now in sight.
