  • Super Falcons of Nigeria are through to the final round of the 2022 AWCON qualifiers despite losing 1-0 to Ghana
  • The Nigerian team earlier defeated the Black Queens 2-0 in Lagos and progressed with 2-1 on aggregates
  • Falcons will now meet the winner of Cote d’Ivoire vs Niger Republic in the final round of the qualifiers in their bid to reach Morocco 2022

The Super Falcons were handed a 1-0 defeat by Black Queens of Ghana, but that does not stop the Nigerian girls from reaching the final round of AWCON 2022 qualifiers.

Falcons advanced with a 2-1 aggregate win and will now take on the winner between Cote d’Ivoire and Niger Republic for the competition proper taking place in Morocco.

Having won the competition 11 times, qualifying for next year's tournament will also see them stand chance to qualify for the Women’s World Cup holding in Australia and New Zealand in 2023.

Vanguard reports that Ghana opened scoring in the 48th minute through Princella Adubea after a goalless first half.

A red card for captain Portia Boakye and Nigeria holding on to their aggregate advantage ended Ghana’s hope of a fight back.

The loss for Ghana means they will continue their wait to feature again at the quadrennial event – a competition they last qualified for in 2007.

In the first leg played at the Mobolaji Johnson Stadium in Lagos, the Black Queens met a more determined Nigerian side who were clearly the better side.

The Super Falcons won the first fixture 2-0 in Lagos with Uchenna Kanu scoring the two goals that gave Nigeria the win.

Uchenna Kanu's reaction via Brila.net:

“I feel really great, I feel proud of the team. First of all I’m proud of the team for the performance today. I’m proud that I’m able to score thanks to my teammates that helped me on that.
“I feel really excited and we are looking forward to the next game and of course I will be doing my job scoring so expect that.''

Carles Puyol showers praises on Oshoala

Legit.ng earlier reported that Nigerian international Asisat Oshoala put up a breathtaking performance in Barcelona Femeni’s 4-1 win over English club Arsenal in a UEFA Women Champions’ League group game.

Barcelona legend Carles Puyol took to social media to commend the Super Falcons star for her brilliant performance saying she had a “great game”.

Puyol congratulated the team and praised Oshoala, while the 26-year-old Ikorodu-born Nigerian star replied; saying "thank you".
