Nigerian international Asisat Oshoala has been rewarded for her role in advancing women's soccer during the Women’s International Champions Cup.

The Barcelona Femeni striker received the prize at the annual WICC Best XI award on Monday as she joined England national team coach Sarina Wiegman.

Other recipients at the awards are journalists Jeff Kassouf and Anna Kessel, U.S. Soccer President Cindy Parlow Cone and Ally Chief Marketing Officer Andrea Brimmer.

Susie Fiore, who is the head of WICC, said via UK Sports:

“The winners work tirelessly to champion the women’s game, often in spite of great obstacles.
“Without the contributions of the 2022 honorees, the women’s game would not have the explosive growth that we’re seeing today.”

Oshoala is the first African female player to feature in the English league, having previously played for Liverpool and Arsenal as she went on to win the 2015 Women’s FA Cup with the Gunners.

A record five-time winner of the African Women’s Footballer of the Year award, Oshoala was the first African to score a goal in a UEFA Women’s Champions League final.

Oshoala ranked 16th best in the world

Nigerian international Asisat Oshoala was ranked 16th best at the 2022 women’s Ballon d’Or. The ceremony was held in the French capital of Paris on Monday night, October 17.

The 28-year-old Super Falcons striker arrived at the Theatre du Chatelet in the company of some of her Barcelona Femeni teammates - including Alexia Putellas, who took home the award.

Oshoala was the only African that made the top 20, as she has been impressive for her Spanish club recently.

Oshoala backs Barcelona to beat Man Utd in Europa League

Sports Brief earlier reported that Oshoala has backed Spanish giants Barcelona to edge out Premier League side Manchester United in the Europa League knockout stage.

The knockout stage of this season's Europa League was drawn on Monday afternoon, November 7, with Manchester United facing Barcelona in two legs.

Oshoala, the Nigerian, is a fan of Manchester United, but this time around, she wants to support her Barcelona club to qualify.
