Nigeria to Tackle Rivals South Africa in Group C As CAF Conducts Draw for 2022 Women’s Cup of Nations

  • This year’s tournament will be the 14th edition of the Africa Women Cup of Nations and will be hosted by Morocco from 2 to 23 July 2022

The Super Falcons are considered heavy favourites to top Group C after they were drawn against South Africa, Burundi, and Bostwana in the group stage of the Africa Women’s Cup of Nations.

The defending champions will once again tackle the Bayana Bayana of South Africa whom they defeated in the last edition hosted by Ghana 4-3 via penalties after a goalless draw in regulation time.

According to Complete Sports, the Super Falcons will be seeking a record-extending 10th AWCON title when the competition begins in Morocco,

Hosts Morocco will take on debutants Burkina Faso, Senegal, and Uganda in Group A, while Group B will be comprised of Cameroon, Zambia, Tunisia, and Togo.

The draws for the 2022 Africa Women’s Cup of Nations was conducted on Friday, April 29 in Rabat, Morocco, and the competition is to begin on July 2.

Group B: Cameroon, Zambia, Tunisia, Togo.

Group C: Nigeria, South Africa, Burundi, Botswana.

2022 AWCON to serve as path to FIFA World Cup

Meanwhile, the Africa Women’s Cup of Nations returns for the first time since 2018 after the last edition was postponed due to Covid-19 in 2020.

According to BBC, the four semi-finalists in this year’s edition to be hosted by Morocco will automatically qualify for the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup.

The 2022 AWCON will mark the first time the competition will be expanding from eight to 12 teams as CAF tries to build the women’s game in the continent.

Kanu tips Super Falcons to defend title in Morocco

Earlier, Sports Brief reported Uchenna Kanu has acknowledged the Super Falcons will face tougher opposition when the Africa Women Cup of Nations kicks off in July.

Nigeria will be seeking to win her 10th AWCON title after qualifying for the competition by edging out Ivory Coast and Ghana in the preliminary round.

Kanu has now tasked the Super Falcons players to build team chemistry before the start of the competition to stand a chance of winning.
