  • Jose Mourinho has been spotted with the president of the Nigeria Football Federation who is desperately in search for a new Super Eagles coach
  • Nigeria relieved Gernot Rohr of his duties as coach of the national team and Augustine Eguavoen will take over the team temporarily
  • Reports claim Pinnick has reached out to Mourinho who has, in turn, recommended fellow Portuguese, Jose Peseiro, for the plum job

The president of the Nigeria Football Federation, Amaju Pinnick, has been spotted with AS Roma manager Jose Mourinho as the search for new Super Eagles coach continues, Soccernet reports.

Amaju Pinnick has never hidden his passion for foreign coaches as reports say the administrator has reached out to the former Chelsea manager to help identify a good coach for Nigeria.

It was gathered via Vanguard that the ‘Special One’ has introduced former Venezuela coach Jose Pesiero to take up the plum job and will accompany his fellow countryman to the West Africa nation for his unveiling.

The NFF sacked Gernot Rohr from his position as coach of the Super Eagles with barely four weeks to the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations.

Augustine Eguavoen has been named to take charge of the team temporarily and lead them to the competition billed to kick-off in Cameroon on January 9.

If officially appointed, Peseiro will observe the team from a distance at the competition and will take over from Eguavoen after the Nations Cup.

The Portuguese will then prepare the Super Eagles for the crucial FIFA World Cup qualifying play-offs in March as Nigeria will attempt to reach the global sporting event billed for Qatar.

Why did Nigeria fire Rohr?

Recent string of poor results was responsible for the NFF hammer according to Amaju Pinnick who stated that the federation needed to prevent a ‘disaster waiting to happen’.

Nigeria managed to reach the World Cup qualifying play-offs following a 1-1 draw with Cape Verde at the Teslim Balogun Stadium in Lagos.

Pinnick also stressed that the indiscipline inside the Super Eagles dressing room has gotten to the stage where players talk back at them and the coaches.

Rohr faults NFF for sacking him

Meanwhile, Sports Brief earlier reported that ousted Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr seems to be upset the way he was fired by the hierarchy of the Nigerian Football Federation.

The Franco-German tactician was relieved of his duties as coach of the Nigerian national football team just weeks before the commencement of the Africa Cup of Nations.

The tactician was in charge of the Eagles for five years, four months and 10 days making him officially the longest-serving coach of the team.
