AFCON Qualifiers: Moses Simon’s Goal Gives Nigeria Win Over Guinea Bissau

Super Eagles of Nigeria on Monday evening, 27 March, returned to winning ways by beating Guinea Bissau 1-0 in the second leg of their 2023 African Cup of Nations qualifiers.

Last week Friday, Guinea Bissau recorded a surprise win over Nigeria in Abuja with many fans left disappointed after the game putting coach Jose Peseiro under serious pressure.

After the tie, Peseiro made it clear that his wards would redeem themselves in the return leg adding that they really missed many scoring chances in Abuja.

Ibrahim Gusau who is the president of the Nigerian Football Federation also warned the Super Eagles players to take the game with all seriousness.

How the game started

Super Eagles started the match impressively with Victor Osimhen looking for ways to put the three-time African champions ahead, but the opponents' defenders gave him no chance.

Osayi Samuel made a fantastic run into the box of the hosts and was brought down in which the referee gave Super Eagles a penalty.

Moses Simon stepped forward to score the penalty for Nigeria in the 30th minute.

That was all Peseiro and his soldiers needed to record a 1-0 win in the tie.

Omeruo speaks on Super Eagles

Earlier, Sports Brief had reported how Kenneth Omeruo disclosed that the current Super Eagles players are better than those under late coach Stephen Keshi who won the 2013 African Cup of Nations in South Africa.

The former Chelsea player stated this while preparing to play for the Nigerian team in their clash against Guinea Bissau on Monday night, March 27.

Interestingly, Omeruo was also part of the Nigerian team that won the 2013 AFCON title, and since then, the Super Eagles have not laid their hands on the diadem.

In that squad, Nigeria had the likes of legendary goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama, Mikel Obi, Ogenyi Onazi, Emmanuel Emenike, Sunday Mba and Victor Moses.
