  • Sunday Mba is unimpressed with the current Super Eagles being managed by Jose Peseiro
  • The AFCON 2013 hero has compared the present squad with the team of about a decade ago
  • He has suggested that some players in the current team are lacking merit and commitment

Former Nigerian international, Sunday Mba has decried the level of poor performances by the current Super Eagles squad headed by Portuguese tactician, Jose Peseiro.

Nigerians have continued to lambaste some players in the team, faulting them for their lackadaisical attitude in competitive and friendly games.

Mba, who was part of the Super Eagles squad that conquered the continent at the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations, is particularly unimpressed with the current team.

In a chat on Brila FM’s No Holds Barred with former Super Eagles left-back, Ifeanyi Udeze, Mba lamented that many of the players appear to not be committed.

He then drew comparison between the team of today and the 2013 set-up, under the tutelage of the late Stephen Keshi.

Mba said via The Nation:

“There was unity in the camp. I wasn’t the only home-based player, but I was the only one that broke into the team. The foreign-based players treated us well. There was no discrimination and the late Stephen Keshi made sure of that."

He commented that the Super Eagles of today were playing as if they were unconcerned about the national team, which made fans and former players unhappy.

Mba also believes some players had not earned their place in the team, while others did not deserve to play for Nigeria.

“I sometimes doubt how they are selected. They are not even playing entertaining or captivating football, and you will be disappointed when you watch them.”

Peseiro was handed the coaching job of Nigeria's national side, after the Super Eagles failed to qualify for the 2022 World Cup.

The team has since set its sights on restoring the proverbial balance, by ensuring qualification for the next tournament in three years or so.

Nigeria backed for 2026 World Cup

Sports Brief earlier reported that Nigerian international, Oghenekaro Etebo gave assurances that the Super Eagles would do everything to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Nigerian national football team failed to qualify for the 2022 edition of the global showpiece, which wrapped up in Qatar last December.

Ghana's Black Stars proceeded to the Mundial after a hard fight at the Moshood Abiola Stadium, advancing on the away goals rule after a 1-1 draw.
