Al-Hilal of Saudi Arabia striker Odion Ighalo has been ranked Nigeria’s best striker for the year 2022 according to new statistics.

International Federation of Football History & Statistics (IFFHS) rated the former Manchester United forward ahead of Napoli striker Victor Osimhen.

The former Watford and Manchester United forward placed 34th with 28 goals for Al-Shabab and Al-Hilal, while Victor Osimhen, who plays for Napoli, did not make the 67-man list, Brila reports.

It does not take anything away, as Osimhen has also been in sublime form for his Italian club, scoring crucial goals to keep them at the summit of the Serie A.

Meanwhile, France striker Kylian Mbappe topped the chart, having scored 56 goals in 56 matches for Ligue 1 outfit Paris Saint Germain.

Mbappe is followed by Norwegian star Erling Haaland who netted 46 goals, while Bergson, German Cano and Robert Lewandowski complete the top five of 2022.

Messi named world best player of 2022

Meanwhile, Lionel Messi has been named the 'World's Best Player' for 2022 by the International Federation of Football History and Statistics (IFFHS).

Messi crowned an exceptional 2022 in the best possible fashion, winning the FIFA World Cup with Argentina while also emerging as the tournament's best player.

He beat competition from PSG teammate Kylian Mbappe, whom Messi beat to the World Cup trophy, and current Ballon d'Or holder Karim Benzema to win the accolade.

Aside from edging the aforementioned names for the accolade, Messi was also named the winner of the IFFHS World's Best International Goal Scorer 2022 Award.

Taiwo Awoniyi closes in on Haaland’s goals’ record

Sports Brief earlier reported that Nigerian international, Taiwo Awoniyi is just one goal away from equalling Erling Haaland’s goal record from open play in the English Premier League this season.

The Nottingham Forest striker has scored four times from open play, just one shy of that of both Haaland and Harry Kane.

It was his fourth league goal of the season, with only Haaland and Kane managing this feat five times in more league games this season.
