  • Leon Balogun has questioned that Ghana use black magic to qualify for the 2022 World Cup
  • The Super Eagles failed to qualify for the event after being edged out by the Black Stars
  • Ghana failed to make it beyond the group stages of the tournament despite a good effort

Nigeria centre-back Leon Balogun has questioned the decision by Ghana, to make a late change of venue before their World Cup play-offs against the Super Eagles.

Ghana made a last-minute switch of venue after the Cape Coast Stadium was deemed unfit for the match in March.

The Black Stars were held in Kumasi by the Super Eagles, before Ghana travelled to Abuja to secure one of the tickets to the World Cup after a 1-1 draw at the Moshood Abiola Stadium.

"It is funny because that season, the away goals rule had been scrapped everywhere. I don’t know why they didn’t do it in Africa… I have no clue. Until this day, I don’t understand," Balogun told The Beautiful Game.

Balogun admitted the first leg against the Black Stars was difficult, but also mentioned the stadium change just days shortly before the encounter.

"You know there was this whole fuss about them changing the stadium at the last minute on Tuesday when they have never lost, and they say whether 'juju' may or may not have been involved also or whatever."

Ghana failed to progress beyond the group stage at the World Cup ongoing in Qatar, following defeats to Uruguay and Portugal. The Black Stars defeated South Korea in their second group game.

Leon Balogun rejected by clubs

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Super Eagles defender Balogun explained why it took time to get another side after leaving Rangers FC.

The 34-year-old revealed that many clubs had rejected him due to his age. He left the Scottish outfit in June after the expiration of his contract, featuring for the club for two seasons.

Balogun spent two months at home training to be fit, before Queens Park Rangers agreed to sign the Nigerian on a one-year deal in August 22.
