Former Super Eagles captain John Mikel Obi has announced his retirement from football after 20 years in which the Nigerian will be remembered as one of the best African midfielders ever.

The Chelsea legend took to his official Instagram page on Tuesday afternoon, 27 September, to make the announcement with the Nigerian thanking all the people who supported his football career.

Obi Mikel is retiring as a hero at the age of 35 with laurels won for both clubs and country as it will be recalled that he was among the Super Eagles players who won the 2013 African Cup of Nations in South Africa.

''There is a saying that “all good things must come to an end”, and for my professional football career, that day is today.

''I look back at the past 20 years of my career, and I must say that I am very satisfied with all that I was able to achieve and more importantly the human it has helped shape.

''All of this would not have been possible without the unwavering support of my family, managers, clubs, coaches, teammates and most importantly my ever-loyal fans. You supported me through my highs and lows, even on days that I did not live up to your expectations. I say a big thank you.''

Mikel Obi played 91 games for the Super Eagles of Nigeria netting six goals before he quit international football in 2019.
