Super Eagles striker, Taiwo Awoniyi could be set for a return to the English Premier League as newly-promoted Nottingham Forest are on the verge of completing a deal for the forward.

Forest has entered an advanced stage of negotiation with the Union Berlin striker who scored a total of 15 league goals for the Bundesliga outfit last season.

According to a report via Soccernet, Forest who are returning to the Premier League for the first time in 23 years are willing to shatter the club’s transfer record to sign the Nigerian striker.

The Reds are ready to pay £17.5 million for Awoniyi, eclipsing their previous club transfer record of £13.5 million paid on Joao Carvalho back in 2018-19.

Awoniyi will be Nottingham Forest first summer signing when the deal is completed as The Reds seek to strengthen their squad ahead of the 2022/23 season.

Liverpool to benefit from Awoniyi sale to Nottingham Forest

Meanwhile, Liverpool are set to profit from the sale of Super Eagles striker, Taiwo Awoniyi to Nottingham Forest from Union Berlin.

The Merseyside team had inserted a 10 percent sell-on clause in the deal when offloading the Nigerian forward to German Bundesliga side Union Berlin last summer The Sun reports.

Awoniyi joined Union Berlin permanently last summer for a fee of £6.5m after initially impressing in his first season on loan from the Reds in the 2020/21 season.

Taiwo Awoniyi scores 12th Bundesliga goal for Union Berlin

Earlier, Sports Brief reported Taiwo Awoniyi was on target again in the German Bundesliga as Union Berlin continues its push to qualify for Europe.

The 24-year-old forward registered his 12th league goal of the season as Union Berlin defeated FC Cologne 1-0 on Friday, April 1st.

Awoniyi netted in the 49th minute to help Union Berlin secure the three points and end a run of three straight games without a win.
