  • Victor Osimhen inspired Nigeria to a 2-1 win over Sierra Leone as the Super Eagles start the AFCON qualifiers with a win
  • Osimhen who troubled the Leone Stars’ defenders throughout the game has taken his goals tally for Nigeria to 11
  • Although the youngster trails Kanu, Amokachi and Okocha’s goals record, he is miles away from that of legendary Rashidi Yekini

Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen has extended his goal tally for the national team to 11 as he closes in on records of Nwankwo Kanu, Daniel Amokachi and Austin Jay Jay Okocha.

Osimhen scored Nigeria’s second goal in their 2-1 win over Sierra Leone at the Moshood Abiola Stadium in Abuja on Thursday, June 9.

It was the striker’s goal number 11 for the national team, having made 21 appearances for the Super Eagles so far.

It takes the tally of the 23-year-old to 11 as he overtakes former Chelsea winger Victor Moses and former West Brom star Peter Osaze Odemwingie on Nigeria’s all-time goalscorer's chart, Daily Post reports.

On the chart, the Napoli striker trails Nwankwo Kanu and Daniel Amokachi who had 12 and 13 goals to their respective names for Nigeria.

Midfield maestro Jay Jay Okocha scored 14 goals for the national team during his playing days, while former Manchester United striker Odion Ighalo had 16 goals in the green and white shirt.

Osimhen is still miles away from catching the late Rashidi Yekini’s 37-goal haul for the Super Eagles. Yekini who passed away on May 4, 2021, remains Nigeria’s record scorer of all time.

The goal poacher played for the national team between 1984 and 1998 making 62 appearances and scoring 37 goals.

Ahmed Musa wants Nigerians to be patient with Super Eagles

Meanwhile, Super Eagles captain Ahmed Musa has admitted that Nigerians are still disappointed over the team’s failure to qualify for the World Cup, but assured they will bounce back to winning ways.

Nigeria fought back to defeat Sierra Leone 2-1 in Match Day 1 of the 2023 AFCON qualifier at the Moshood Abiola Stadium in Abuja.

The visitors went ahead in the 11th minute courtesy of a flying header by Jonathan Morsay, but Alex Iwobi restored parity five minutes later.

Arsenal fans told to forget about Osimhen

Sports Brief earlier reported that following rumours that Arsenal are making efforts to sign Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen from the Italian side Napoli, football transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano claims the Gunners are interested in Gabriel Jesus from Manchester City.

Mikel Arteta has been in search of a new striker to replace former captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette ahead of next season, and Osimhen and Jesus have been linked as possible replacements.

Just Arsenal reports that Romano stated that the Premier League club are yet to show any interest in Osimhen and are considering a move for Gabriel Jesus.
