  • Nigeria vs Sierra Leone remains the talking point as both teams will clash in a crucial 2023 AFCON qualifier
  • The Leone Stars are in Abuja for the showdown as the team's media officer claims they are aiming to take all three points
  • Eric Fomba also stated that the team will approach the encounter differently from the 4-4 draw they earned the last time they were in Nigeria

The Leone Stars of Sierra Leone will go for all three points when they face the Super Eagles of Nigeria at the Moshood Abiola Stadium in Abuja on Thursday evening.

Both countries go head-to-head as they begin their quest to qualify for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations billed to be hosted by Ivory Coast.

The media officer of the Leone Stars, Eric Fomba, stated that his side are in Nigeria to claim all three points, but at most, share the spoils.

The Leone Stars secured a 4-4 draw the last time they visit Nigeria as they came from four goals down to earn a point in Asaba.

In a chat with Sports Brief, Fomba disclosed that Sierra Leone mean business and will approach the game differently with the aim of claiming all points.

He told Sports Brief:

“We are not going back to history, we are here with different plans, different mentality, different approach. Yes we respect the Super Eagles of Nigeria.
“We approach teams according to their capacity and we are here. Our first expectation is to get the three points from the Super Eagles. If that does not happen we expect to share the points and if we are unable to share the points we look at what might happen next.

Asked about the hospitality received in Nigeria ahead of the clash, Fomba added:

“Nigeria and Sierra Leone have a lot of commonalities. Sierra Leone regard Nigeria as a ‘big brother’. Nigeria has aided us when we needed the most.
“Nigeria is one of those countries that have always supported Sierra Leone in terms of its agony – the Sierra Leone rebel war…a lot of cultures as well.”

Osimhen expected to lead Super Eagles attack

Meanwhile, Sports Brief earlier reported that Napoli striker Victor Osimhen is expected to lead the attack for Nigeria alongside impressive forward Cyriel Dessers who was in fine form for Feyenoord at the just concluded season playing on loan from Belgian outfit Genk.

Jose Peseiro will likely start Francis Uzoho in goal, with Kenneth Omeruo, Troost-Ekong, Ola Aina and Ezekiel Bassey manning the defence.

Moses Simon is projected to start from the left flank while in the midfield should be Ohhenekaro Etebo and Joe Aribo.
