  • Super Eagles of Nigeria will host Sierra Leone on Thursday, June 9, before they head out to face Sao Tome and Principe on June 13
  • AFCON 2023 qualifiers have taken center stage and Jose Peseiro has named 27 players to prosecute the matches for Nigeria
  • Quite a number of Nigerians are however divided over the squad, with many claiming the team list has been politicised

A number of Nigerians have besieged the comment section of NFF’s post announcing that 27 players have been invited for the 2023 AFCON qualifiers against Sierra Leone and Sao Tome and Principe.

The Super Eagles host the Lone Stars on Thursday, June 9 at the Moshood Abiola Stadium in Abuja and then play away to Sao Tome and Principe on June 13.

Among the invited players are captain Ahmed Musa and his assistant William Troost-Ekong as well as a number of players who were part squad that toured the United States for friendly matches against Mexico and Ecuador, Soccernet reports.

In the statement released by the NFF, 8 strikers have been called for the showdown but Kelechi Iheanacho and Odion Ighalo's names were omitted.

Below are reactions to the team list

One said:

“They’ve turned football to politics too, they keep recycling the same nonsense. Until we usher in a new Nigeria come 2023, make ona dey manage this n*nsense.”

Another wrote:

“9 forwards that's cr*zy and only 5 midfielders and Iwobi is not a real midfielder. This is the problem of our team. We need more depth and quality in midfield and quality at the back too. Hopefully God provides us a Veratti, Iniesta or Thiago very soon.”

Another said:

“Bring back Awoniyi, Nwakali and Ejuke. They are good players. Bin Moffi, Musa and Chukwueze. Yes you heard me Chukwueze! He is one player that has magnificently underperformed for the Super Eagles in spite of numerous call-ups to the national team. Replace him with Amoo instead.”

One queried:

"I thought musa said after afcon he'll retire? What is he still doing there?"

Peseiro disappointed following Nigeria’s loss to Ecuador

Meanwhile, Sports Brief earlier reported that Super Eagles coach Jose Peseiro has reacted to Nigeria’s 1-0 loss to Ecuador in a friendly match played at the 25,000 capacity Red Bull Arena in Harrison, New Jersey.

It is the second match the Portuguese tactician will be handling since he was appointed the new technical adviser of the Nigerian national team.

Peseiro lost his debut game with the team as Mexico defeated Nigeria 2-1 at the AT&T Stadium and Arlington and the manager had hoped for a better result in his second game in charge.
