  • Ismaila Mabo is not happy with the Nigeria Football Federation following the appointment of Jose Peseiro as Super Eagles coach
  • The former Super Falcons coach stated that ex-international Ndubuisi Egbo would have been good for the position
  • Mabo added that Portuguese tactician Peseiro does not know how things work in Nigeria and does not understand the culture

A former coach of the Super Falcons Ismaila Mabo has decried the Nigerian Football Federation’s idea to employ a foreigner to become the Super Eagles coach.

The NFF on Sunday announced Portuguese tactician Jose Peseiro as the Super Eagles coach, leaving the Nigerian football community divided.

According to Mabo, the NFF should have employed an indigenous coach for the plum job as he insisted that Ndubuidi Egbo would do well in that position.

A number of footballers have criticised the appointment of Peseiro as Edema Fuludu and John Fashanu queried the credentials of the 62-year-old coach.

And now, Mabo who guided the Falcons to the quarter-finals of the 1999 Women’s World Cup and 2004 Olympics Games says Egbo would have been a good choice for the plum job.

Mabo told The PUNCH:

“Even if they want to bring a coach from abroad, they can bring our local coaches who are doing very well abroad. For instance, someone like Ndubuisi Egbo would have been a very good choice to handle the national team.
“Peseiro doesn’t have any idea of how things are done here or our culture and it is just like bringing back Gernot Rohr but in another form.”

Ex-international Egbo became the first African coach to win a top-flight league in Europe and play in the UEFA Champions League, after guiding Tirana to their first league title in a decade back in July 2020.

Peterside Idah declares interest in becoming NFF president

Meanwhile, Sports Brief earlier reported that former Nigerian international Peterside Idah has disclosed his reasons for vying for the position of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) president.

The current president of the federation Amaju Pinnick has a few months left and the next election is scheduled to hold in September.

Some other ex-internationals have also indicated an interest in Pinnick’s position including Benedict Akwuegbu who has made his intentions public.
