Aghahowa Speaks Following Nigeria’s World Cup Miss, Tells NFF What to Do to Jose Peseiro

Former Super Eagles striker Julius Aghahowa has rued Nigeria’s World Cup miss and has urged the Nigeria Football Federation to give new coach Jose Peseiro time.

Peseiro was announced as the new Super Eagles technical adviser as he will be assisted by Nigerian coaches including Finidi George, Salisu Yusuf, Usman Abdallah and Ike Shorunmu.

The new technical crew replaced Augustine Eguavoen led coaches who failed to lead the national team to qualify for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

And Peseiro and his consortium are expected to take charge of the international friendlies against Ecuador and Mexico in the next few weeks.

Speaking with Brila FM, Aghahowa urges the NFF to give the new coaching crew enough time to build a new team.

Aghahowa said:

“The target should be to build a formidable team, although some people might have different opinions, but I want to see a long time plans for this team to represent this country in many tournaments and you can’t do that by playing friendlies and after few poor results and then they get kicked out. That’s not how to do it.
“You have to give the technical crew time. For example maybe four or five years, then you know what to expect.
"Not like after one tournament or qualifiers and you kick the whole technical crew out when they don’t do well and bring in someone else. You aren’t going to progress that way.”

Meanwhile, Finidi George has revealed he did not see his promotion by the Nigeria Football Federation to the first assistant role of the Super Eagles coming.

The 51-year-old who was a vital member of the Super Eagles' Golden Generation that won the Africa Cup of Nations in 1994 was initially listed as the second assistant while Salisu Yusuf was named the first assistant.

Finidi who was speaking for the first time since his change in appointment has now beckoned on all newly appointed coaches of the Super Eagles to work together.

Fashanu blasts NFF over Peseiro’s appointment

Sports Brief earlier reported that former England and Wimbledon striker, John Fashanu, says he is very disappointed that the Nigeria Football Federation appointed Jose Peseiro as the new Super Eagles coach.

The Nigerian descent expressed doubts over the ability of the Portuguese tactician to handle the Super Eagle,s saying the next six months will show what he meant.

The NFF announced on Sunday that Peseiro has been officially appointed the coach of the Super Eagles with immediate effect.
