Super Eagles striker, Taiwo Awoniyi says he is not surprised by his success so far in the German Bundesliga after an impressive campaign for Union Berlin.

The 24-year-old striker made history on Sunday, April 17 after he netted his 13th league goal of the season to become the first man to reach the milestone for Union Berlin.

According to a report via Soccernet, Awoniyi has now credited the togetherness and team spirit at the camp of the Die Eisernen as one reason he has been successful in the Bundesliga.

“I will never say I’ve overachieved. The goal is to be better than who I am.
“When I came to Berlin, I just need a place to feel welcome, a place to have opportunities. I thank God for the coaches and team for being behind me when it’s not going good, they are still behind you.
“For me, being here is about doing the best for myself, developing my skill and talent and I think that’s what is happening presently.”

Taiwo Awoniyi joined Union Berlin for a reported £6.5m deal from English Premier League club, Liverpool after failing to make any appearance for Jurgen Klopp’s team.

West Ham eye move for Taiwo Awoniyi

Meanwhile, English Premier League side, West Ham United have entered the race for the signature of Taiwo Awoniyi from Union Berlin.

According to West Ham Zone, the Hammers have shown strong interest in the Super Eagles striker who is expected to cost as high as €20million.

West Ham will battle the likes of Newcastle and Southampton for the Nigerian as they seek to add another striker to their team to lessen the load on Michail Antonio next season.

Earlier, Sports Brief reported Taiwo Awoniyi scored Union Berlin’s opening goal in their surprise 2-0 victory over Eintracht Frankfurt in the Bundesliga on Sunday, April 16.

The Super Eagles forward have been in inspiring form for Die Eisernen as he netted his 13th league goal of the 2021/22 season in just his 27th appearance for the German side.

Union Berlin's Awoniyi won a fight with Frankfurt captain Hinteregger before outmuscling Ndicka to score the game's first goal.
